Mass Effect 3 Impressions and Thoughts

So I didn’t have something out Monday because it was my rest day from writing and yesterday I was super busy with Video Game Hour Live, which I was on talking about Mass Effect 3. Check it out at the link below. (It might be processing). I also was on a podcast called Video Game After Live, which you can find on iTunes where we talk about various games coming up and other stuff.

Other than being busy with the show and the podcast I spent most of my time yesterday playing Mass Effect 3. I really dislike Bioware and the direction they go with games but I’m thoroughly enjoying my time with the game. As a narrative, it has its problems but the emotion that it’s trying to evoke from you is absolutely flawless. I will have a review of this out by this weekend and hopefully I can fully articulate that. Without going into actual details, I think the theme of loss is very prominent in the game and essentially everything that happens in the story goes back to that theme. It’s a cleverly crafted idea that expands well whether you’re a long time fan of the series or a newcomer like myself.

Enough about the story though. The gameplay is where I was most surprised. I hated Mass Effect 2’s shooting gameplay. Here it’s more or less the same but it’s fine tuned so it’s a much more enjoyable experience. It also helps that the environments are much more open allowing for a more liberating experience rather than a claustrophobic one. It just goes to show that perhaps Bioware does understand how to make a game. Beyond the shooting gameplay the RPG elements have been more or less unchanged. They added new ways to customize yourself through weapons and its weight systems. It’s all fun as it rewards those that can utilize the least amount of weapons with great control.

You can always woo your companions that travel with you along the Normandy and there are tons of side quests that can distract you from proceeding through the main quest. Traveling around the universe using the Normandy is sort of a chore but you gotta get around somehow.

Mass Effect 3 is a good game and I have to admit this despite my hate for Bioware. Unlike Star Wars: The Old Republic, this is a finely crafted game. It has its problems here and there but for the most part, this is a quality game that everyone should check out. Look for my review that will go up this Saturday or Sunday.
